Genomic Testing

Contact

When it comes to cancer care, one of the main goals is to recommend personalized treatment options for each patient. Genomic testing is done to allow your oncologist to prescribe the best treatment for you.

What is Genomic Testing?

Breast cancer genomics is the study of the genes within a tumor. Genomic testing looks at all of the genes inside the cancer tumor itself to evaluate how active they are and whether they have any mutations. Genomic testing can assist an oncologist in deciding which targeted therapies may be most successful for a specific type of cancer, as well as predict how likely the cancer is to recur.

Genomic Testing Options

At Tucson Breast Health Specialists, we offer the following genomic testing:

MammaPrint: The MammaPrint genomic test analyzes 70 genes in the early stages of breast cancer. These results will show whether the breast cancer has a high or low risk of recurring within 10 years of a diagnosis. The knowledge of the size and risk helps oncologists determine which treatment options following surgery will be beneficial.

Oncotype: The Oncotype DX Breast DCIS Score test analyzes 12 genes in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) recurrence or invasive breast cancer recurrence within 10 years of a diagnosis of DCIS. Knowing this risk helps oncologists determine if radiation therapy following DCIS surgery would be beneficial.

The Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score test analyzes 21 genes in early-stage, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer that is either node-negative or has spread to no more than 3 lymph nodes. This score helps to predict the risk of recurrence, as well as how likely someone is to benefit from chemotherapy. It also helps oncologists to determine if adding chemotherapy to hormonal therapy following surgery would be beneficial.

“The level of care is excellent.”

Dr. Ley is extremely good at explaining your breast cancer, treatment options, and everything she is going to do. She is a masterful surgeon and uses plastic techniques to close incisions, leaving minimal scarring. In addition, she is warm, pleasant, and a lovely person. I am so happy that I found her based on a friend’s recommendation. I can’t say enough about her and the practice’s excellent care.

When diagnosed with Breast Cancer my daughter, which is a surgical nurse, started searching for a breast surgeon for me. Within a short period of time, she called stating “Mom, Dr Ley is the surgeon for you”! I have not been disappointed & have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Ley & her staff. They truly care.

Dr. Ley helped me through the first round of BC in 2017 with kindness, compassion and expertise! I had absolutely no reservations when trusting her for a 2021 and now for the 3rd time I can’t imagine going through this without her. She is a lion when it comes to fighting for you, calls you personally even though she has to be the busiest Dr. and mother I know. She’s considerate of your needs, fears and concerns and never lets you go it alone. Can’t say enough good!
