What are Post-Op Garments?
Following your breast procedure, you may be instructed to wear a post-op garment or post-op bra. These garments are specifically designed to support and compress the chest area and are often made with breathable fabrics. They should be worn for 24 hours a day -except for bathing- for up to 6 weeks after surgery. Your breast surgeon will instruct you on how long and how often you will need to wear your post-op bra depending on your specific procedure.

More About Dr. LeyPost-op garments following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or reconstructive surgery offer many benefits, including the following.
Reduced swelling: Following surgery, your body will produce fluid, which can result in swelling. Post-op garments have compression to help to reduce this swelling, resulting in a shorter, more comfortable recovery period.
Fewer seromas: A seroma or collection of fluid can occur following surgery. These seromas can be uncomfortable and delay healing. Post-op garments apply pressure to the area, reducing the risk of seroma formation.
Reduced risk of lymphedema: Lymphedema, or the buildup of fluid in the lymphatic system, can result in swelling and pain following surgery. Post-op garments can reduce the risk of the condition by applying pressure and reducing fluid buildup.
“The level of care is excellent.”
Choosing the Best Post-Surgery Bra for You
It is important to choose a post-op bra that is both comfortable and effective. Some key features to look for include:
No wires: Post-procedure garments and bras should be wire-free. This is because wires pose the risk of cutting into the skin, which you may not notice due to post-surgery numbness.
Soft, breathable fabric: Choosing a soft bra made with breathable fabric is key. Because you will be wearing this bra for a significant amount of time after surgery, it is important that it is comfortable.
Adjustability: Choose a post-op bra with adjustable straps and closures to ensure a proper fit. Also, choosing a bra with a wider bottom band can feel less restrictive and more comfortable.
