Radiation can cause fibrosis (scarring) and reduce elasticity or stretchiness of the skin, and reduce blood supply to the tissues. Because of this, side effects may occur. Common side effects of radiation after mastectomy with implant reconstruction include capsular contracture, thinning of skin, tightening of skin, reduced range of motion and poor wound healing. However, there are some treatment methods to help reduce uncomfortable side effects, including the following.

A combination of Pentoxifylline with Vitamin E is an effective option for the prevention and/or treatment of side effects of therapeutic radiation.
The regimen is to start right after the last radiation treatment is completed and is to be continued for 6-12 months.
Treatment regimen:
- Pentoxifylline (Trental) 400 mg daily- on days 1-7
- Pentoxifylline (Trental) 400 mg twice daily- on days 8-14
- Pentoxifylline (Trental) 400 mg three times daily starting on day 15 and continued for 6-12 months
- Vitamin E 400 IU once daily to continue from day 1

Pentoxifylline is to be taken with a glass of water and always on a full stomach (after a meal).
Please make sure that we have a current list of your medications, and that it has been reviewed by your doctor before you start this regimen. Tell your surgeon you are taking these medications before procedures. Both medications may increase the risk of bleeding in some specific situations.
Singulair
The medication Singulair (montelukast) is most known for treating allergies and asthma. However, it can be used to reduce the risk of capsular contracture and fibrosis after mastectomy, reconstruction, and radiation. It is taken once a day and is prescribed by your breast or plastic surgeon.
