What is Constipation?

Constipation occurs when your bowls move less than normal or when your stool becomes hard and difficult to pass. There are many possible causes of constipation, including surgical procedures, medications, treatments, lack of activity, change in food intake, poor fluid intake, and more. Individuals who take certain types of pain medication have a higher risk of constipation.

Signs and symptoms of constipation include:

  • Small, hard bowel movements.
  • Stomachache or cramping.
  • Frequently passing gas or belching.
  • A bloated or puffy belly.
  • Lack of regular bowel movements within the past 3 days.
  • Vomiting or nausea.

Constipation Treatment Options

It may be beneficial to speak with your cancer care team to discuss a daily bowel care plan. They may suggest over-the-counter stool softeners or fiber supplements. It may also be helpful to keep track of your bowel movements so that constipation can be noticed more quickly. Also, do not use enemas or suppositories, and ask your cancer care team before starting any new medications.

There are a variety of ways that you can take action to prevent and treat constipation, including:

  • Drinking more fluids.
  • Using the restroom as soon as you have the urge.
  • Get as much exercise as possible.
  • Avoid foods that may cause constipation such as eggs or cheese.
  • Avoid chewing gum and using straws to drink, as they can cause gas.
  • 1-2 oz of prune juice and 1 Tbs melted butter taken by mouth, may repeat in 6-8 hours.
  • Over-the-counter stool softeners like Colace can help prevent constipation.

“The level of care is excellent.”

Dr. Ley is extremely good at explaining your breast cancer, treatment options, and everything she is going to do. She is a masterful surgeon and uses plastic techniques to close incisions, leaving minimal scarring. In addition, she is warm, pleasant, and a lovely person. I am so happy that I found her based on a friend’s recommendation. I can’t say enough about her and the practice’s excellent care.

When diagnosed with Breast Cancer my daughter, which is a surgical nurse, started searching for a breast surgeon for me. Within a short period of time, she called stating “Mom, Dr Ley is the surgeon for you”! I have not been disappointed & have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Ley & her staff. They truly care.

If you have not had a bowel movement in 3 days, have blood in your stool, have not had a bowel movement 1-2 days after taking a stool softener or a laxative, or develop loose or watery stools, do not hesitate to reach out to your cancer care team for further evaluation.
