Pumps for Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is the swelling that occurs when something affects the lymphatic system. When this system is disrupted, the body can accumulate fluid which may cause various areas of the body to swell. While it most commonly affects the arms and legs, it can also affect other areas. Lymphedema can increase the risk of an infection where it occurs.

For breast cancer patients, lymphedema can affect the arm or chest wall after lymph node surgery of the armpit. This procedure can disrupt the channels responsible for carrying lymph fluid from the hand, arm, and trunk to the bloodstream.

Symptoms may begin as a mild ache in the arm, a feeling of tightness in the arms, a feeling of heaviness, or obvious swelling.

Pneumatic Compression Pump Therapy

Pumps for lymphedema, also called pneumatic compression pumps or intermittent pneumatic compression pumps, are devices to treat edema (swelling). They are inflatable, padded vests, sleeves, socks, or wraps that use pressure to circulate fluid in the body. This reduces swelling and improves lymph flow.

You must never use a pump for lymphedema alone without proper instruction from a specialist. Your specialist should teach you how to use your pump correctly, set the pressure to your needs, and give you instructions on how frequently to use the pump for the best outcome.
