Scars tell a story, but you get to decide how much of that story is visible. For many of our patients, the scars left behind after breast surgery are a daily reminder of a chapter they are ready to move past. Scar camouflage tattooing is a gentle, non-surgical option that can soften the appearance of a mature scar and help it blend more naturally with the surrounding skin.
At Tucson Breast Health Specialists, scar camouflage is performed by Dawn Morrow, our paramedical tattoo artist. Dawn is a breast cancer survivor herself, and she brings that lived experience to every appointment. Her work is about far more than pigment and skin. It is about helping people feel at home in their bodies again.
Please note: we do not offer scar camouflage tattooing for burn scars. Burn scars behave very differently from surgical scars and require a specialized approach that falls outside the services we provide.
What Is Scar Camouflage Tattooing?
Scar camouflage tattooing, sometimes called skin repigmentation or corrective pigment camouflage, is a paramedical tattooing technique. Using very fine needles and custom-blended pigments, your artist deposits color into the scar tissue to reduce the contrast between the scar and the surrounding skin.
Most mature scars heal lighter than the surrounding skin. They lose the pigment-producing cells that give skin its natural color, which is why an older scar often looks white, silver, or shiny. Scar camouflage adds carefully matched color back into that pale tissue, so the eye no longer travels straight to it.
It is important to understand what this treatment can and cannot do. Scar camouflage does not remove a scar, flatten a raised scar, or change its texture. What it can do is make the scar significantly less noticeable. Many patients tell us the difference is enough that they stop thinking about it, which is often the goal.
Scar Camouflage After Breast Surgery
Breast surgery and reconstruction can leave scars in several places, and not all of them are on the breast itself. Dawn works with patients on scars including:
- Mastectomy incision lines, including scars after a double mastectomy
- Lumpectomy and partial mastectomy scars
- Scars from breast reconstruction, including flap donor sites on the abdomen or back
- Surgical drain sites
- Port placement and removal scars on the upper chest
- Axillary scars from lymph node surgery
- Biopsy scars
Scar camouflage is often the finishing touch in a longer reconstructive journey. Some patients pair it with areola and nipple tattooing, which recreates the look of a natural areola after reconstruction. Others come in for camouflage alone. Dawn will help you decide what makes sense for your body and your goals.
Are You a Candidate for Scar Camouflage?
The best candidates for scar camouflage have scars that are fully mature, stable in color, and flat or close to flat. In general, we ask that a scar be at least 12 months old before it is treated, though Dawn and Dr. Ley will confirm the right timing for your situation. Treating a scar too early can interfere with healing and lead to unpredictable results.
Skin tone also matters. Scar camouflage works by matching pigment to your natural color, and results are generally most predictable when there is a clear contrast to correct and the surrounding skin tone is stable year-round. Dawn evaluates every scar individually and will tell you honestly if she does not believe you will get a result worth the investment. A small patch test is often performed first so you can both see how your skin responds to pigment before committing to a full session.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Consultation. Dawn examines the scar in natural light, reviews your surgical and medical history, discusses your goals, and sets realistic expectations about what the outcome may look like. If a patch test is appropriate, it is usually done at this visit.
Color matching. Pigments are custom blended to your skin tone. This is the part that takes real artistry, since skin is rarely one flat color and pigment can shift slightly as it heals.
Treatment. A topical numbing cream is applied before Dawn begins. Most patients describe the sensation as mild, often less uncomfortable than they expected, and areas with reduced sensation after surgery may feel very little at all. Session length depends on the size and number of scars being treated.
Multiple sessions. Scar camouflage is built up gradually rather than completed in a single visit. Most patients need two to four sessions spaced roughly six to eight weeks apart, which allows the skin to heal fully and lets Dawn refine the color at each step. Building slowly is safer and produces a much more natural result than trying to do everything at once.
Healing and Aftercare
Immediately after your session, the treated area may look slightly red, tender, or darker than the final result. This settles over the following days. Pigment typically lightens by a noticeable amount as the skin heals, which is why Dawn plans for it.
Dawn will give you written aftercare instructions specific to your treatment. In general, you can expect to:
- Keep the area clean and dry for the first several days
- Apply the ointment that Dawn recommends, sparingly
- Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and long soaks for about two weeks
- Avoid direct sun exposure on the area while it heals, and use sunscreen on it long term
- Skip heavy workouts and anything that causes sweating for a few days
- Let any flaking resolve on its own without picking or scrubbing
Sun protection matters well beyond the healing window. Ultraviolet exposure breaks down pigment faster than anything else, so daily SPF on the treated area will help your results last.
How Long Do Results Last?
Scar camouflage is considered semi-permanent. The pigment sits in the skin for years, but it does gradually soften as your body metabolizes it and as sun exposure takes its toll. Most patients return for a refresh every few years to keep the color looking current, especially since your natural skin tone can shift with age and with the seasons.
Because pigment does not tan the way skin does, patients who tan heavily may notice the treated area standing out more in summer. This is worth discussing with Dawn during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scar Camouflage
Do you treat burn scars?
No. Tucson Breast Health Specialists does not offer scar camouflage tattooing for burn scars. Burned tissue heals with different texture, elasticity, and blood supply than surgical scars, and it requires a different specialty.
Is scar camouflage the same as a cover-up tattoo?
No. A decorative cover-up tattoo places a design over a scar. Scar camouflage uses skin-toned pigment to make the scar itself less visible, with no design involved.
Does scar camouflage tattooing hurt?
Most patients report mild discomfort. Topical numbing is used, and many surgical scars have reduced sensation, which makes the process easier than expected.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on the size, number, and complexity of the scars being treated, and on how many sessions you need. Dawn will provide a quote at your consultation. Scar camouflage is generally considered cosmetic and is not typically covered by insurance.
Can I have scar camouflage if I had radiation?
Possibly, but radiated skin needs individual evaluation and physician clearance first. Radiation changes how skin holds pigment and how it heals.
How soon after surgery can I be treated with scar camouflage tattooing?
Usually no sooner than 12 months after your procedure, and sometimes longer. The scar needs to be fully mature and stable before pigment is added.
Will the scar be completely invisible?
Complete invisibility is not the goal and is not a realistic promise. The goal is meaningful improvement, and for most patients the scar becomes something they no longer notice.
